Sam Browne and Oval Punches
The punch to the left of the picture is a Sam Browne or Buttonhole punch. It cuts a round hole with a slit, rather like a keyhole shape. The round hole is pushed over a Sam Browne stud for a quick fixing on a bag. The slit cut by the punch facilitates the easy closing and opening of a bag lid.
The punch to the right of the picture is an oval punch. Some people consider an oval hole more attractive but certainly, on thicker leather, it assists a buckle pin to lie flatter against the buckle bar.
